Below is the heel pad number. An
unmistakable trademark of
originality.

The rubber ring that surrounds the
shifter on the carpet is another clear
indicator of originality.

The pouch and hardtop latch tools.

The factory original heel pad with part number is no longer available for purchase
new & replacement carpet comes with a generic item.  Because of this, finding
an original one is a great indicator of miles, use and overall care on a Pagoda.

Passenger side foot well and
carpet is also in great condition.

This area is very susceptible to
corrosion. In this case it is rust-free
and original.

Lift up the seats and find good looking
carpet everywhere.

The rear floor wells are located
behind the seats and under the wooden
covers.

Of course this car exhibits the correct factory headlight notches.

Notice the inner fenders with correct spot welds and the absolutely factory original firewall pad.  These pads with the correct pattern are no available from Mercedes.  The only replacement part available looks and feels different.  Finding a great original firewall pad is a good indicator of overall originality of a 280SL and the sort of life it has lead.

The picture to the left shows us the data plate. The picture to the right displays the corresponding body number stamp on the hood.
On the left, we see it is a # 180 silver car  (as represented on the second line by 180 G ) and the body number is visible
on the last line of the data plate showing us 07913.  Note that the last three numbers are stamped on hood indicating "numbers matching". The same numbers are found on the deck lid and underside of hardtop.  In this case, all numbers are present, visible and matching the chassis plate.

Notice the build date?  Yes, that is correct! An actual, built in 1971, Mercedes Benz 280SL.
The build date is in the top left of the picture above shown as 1/71 (January 1971).
Mercedes switched SL production to the R107 chassis right after late February or March, so just 821 true 1971 280SLs were built making them the rarest of the series.
Of these 821 cars only a small number were U.S. manual transmission cars (we've heard 360).
