This is a very original car, time-machine like except it has been painted. It was painted between April and July of 1985. The paint job consumed 123 hours. This was a restoration style paint job where the car was totally de-trimmed prior to painting. At today's labor and material costs this translates to a $15,000 paint job. On top of this it was painted by a person who holds a Ph.D. Let me clarify. The long time owner of this car was a professor at U.C. Berkeley. He was on the Ph.D. committee with a fellow who was Professor of Insect Physiology. This gentleman's son was Director of the Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences. He was such a car enthusiast that he opened an automotive paint facility in order to moonlight evenings and weekends. They were all friends and he agreed to do a "very special" paint job on this 280SL.
